EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Cam Heyward dropped to a knee and was checked on by athletic trainers after the Pittsburgh Steelers stopped the New York Jets’ Justin Fields a yard shy of a go-ahead score on a 3rd-and-goal from Pittsburgh’s 10-yard line.

The veteran defensive lineman and team captain pointed at his face while walking to the sideline, then held a towel over his eye on the way. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin called a timeout before Field skipped in for a touchdown on a fourth-down bootleg. Heyward returned to the field after the score to help keep the Jets out on a 2-point try.

Steelers linebacker Malik Harrison was hurt as Fields scampered in.

Heyward had totaled two tackles up to that point, one of them for a loss. He also had a pass defended. On Saturday night, the longtime Steelers big man and the team agreed on some contract incentives that put some drama to rest.

“A deadline deal: Steelers and team captain Cam Heyward reached an agreement tonight on a revised deal that will add over $3 million in incentives this year and allows him to earn up to $18 million this season, per source,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter wrote Saturday night on X. “Heyward will play Sunday vs. the Jets.”

Via a March roster bonus, Heyward earned $13.45 million of the $14.75 million he was scheduled to make this season.
