The Buffalo Bills were the last of the NFL’s undefeated teams heading into their Sunday Night Football clash vs. the New England Patriots, but following a sloppy effort on offense, an erratic performance on defense and plenty of penalties, the Bills (4-1) took their first loss of the season.

Today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks examines what went wrong in Buffalo’s 23-20 home loss to the New England Patriots (3-2).

What happened in the Bills loss to Patriots?

The Buffalo Bills not only suffered their first loss of the season, they saw their 14-game home winning streak come to an end at the hand of the New England Patriots. Buffalo came out flat from the get-go, scoring only three points in the first half while losing two fumbles in the opening half. Buffalo’s three turnovers led to 10 New England points, as the Bills continuously shot themselves in the foot (11 penalties sure didn’t help).

Among the other reasons the Bills fell to the Patriots: Buffalo’s offensive line failed to open up many holes for James Cook and the rushing attack; the Bills wide receivers struggled to create any separation against a solid Patriots secondary; wide receiver Stefon Diggs torched Buffalo’s secondary in his first trip back to Orchard Park since being dealt away at the end of the 2023 NFL season; and when it mattered most, New England quarterback Drake Maye showed poise in picking apart Buffalo’s defense.
