The Buffalo Bills are signing a new punter in the wake of an injury to Cameron Johnston. After a tryout on Monday, former San Francisco 49ers punter Mitch Wishnowsky is being added to the active roster while Johnston goes to injured reserve.

Johnston may have been in line to be replaced even before the injury. He was signed just one game into the season to replace Brad Robbins, but he didn’t do much better. Johnston actually had a worse net average at 37.9 yards per punt, dismal by today’s NFL standards.

Wishnowsky (33) is originally from Australia and attended college at Santa Barbara City and Utah, where he won the Ray Guy Award in 2016. He was a fourth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2019 and played for them until the end of last season. He was released in May.

After sitting out the summer, Wishnowsky signed with the Washington Commanders practice squad in September when their punter was dealing with an injury. Wishnowsky was released on September 13th.

For his career, Wishnowsky averaged 45.6 yards per punt and 40.7 net. He finished 2024 with only 36.3 net yards per punt after battling a back injury that ultimately landed him on injured reserve.
