The Bills were very close to not setting NFL history on Sunday, but the loss kept them from the Super Bowl.
We try to look on the bright side and be thankful we get to see Josh Allen and these wonderful Buffalo Bills teams lace up the cleats week in and week out. We enjoy all the wins, the trips to the playoffs, and even close games in the second half of the AFC Championship Game.
The stat I’m about to highlight has a lot of that positivity in it, but it also has massive heartbreak, so gird yourself.
On Sunday, the Buffalo Bills set the NFL record for most wins in a seven-season timespan without reaching the Super Bowl.
According to Pro Football Network, the Bills have 84 wins in seven seasons, besting the current iteration of the Baltimore Ravens at 81 wins. The 1999-2005 Indianapolis Colts had 80 wins while the 2004 to 2010 San Diego Chargers had 79 wins.
Should the Bills continue their winning ways in the 2025 regular season, that number will only go up. The 2018 Bills only had six wins, so if that year drops off and is replaced by another 10-win season or more, the Bills could potentially reach 90 wins in a seven-season span without a trip to the Big Game.
It’s not all gloom and doom, however. The 2006 Indianapolis Colts didn’t just make the Super Bowl, they won the whole dang thing. They only had one losing trip to the AFC Championship Game during their five-year run that preceded the Super Bowl win, like the Ravens, but the Bills have two trips to the penultimate step.
Those Chargers only had one AFC Championship Game trip, too, but never could get over the hump despite switching from Marty Schottenheimer to Norv Turner in 2007. They haven’t made it back to the conference championship since Turner’s first season.
