Thompson played for Sean McDermott in Carolina at the beginning of his career when McDermott was the defensive coordinator there.

The Bills extended star linebacker Terrell Bernard and still have Matt Milano on the roster to act as their starting duo.

Thompson had spent the entirety of his 10-year career with the Panthers after being taken with the 25th overall selection of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Washington.

In his 10-year career, Shaq Thompson has had 12 sacks, 752 tackles, and 54 tackles for loss.

A native of Sacramento, Thompson has only appeared in six games over the past two seasons. Now, he has a much-needed change of scenery.

Thompson will wear the No. 45 jersey with the team.

Shaq Thompson Has Much To Prove After the Panthers Moved On

In February, the Panthers informed veteran linebacker Shaq Thompson that he could enter free agency and that they were moving in another direction.

The 31-year-old Thompson, a team captain and trusted mentor, had been with the team since 2015 but has played just six games in the last two seasons because of injuries.

Their first-round pick in 2015, he played in a Super Bowl as a rookie alongside legends Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis.

Many players tend to play with a chip on their shoulder after one team basically throws them away.

Thompson had a career-high 135 tackles in 2022 but suffered a broken ankle in Week 2 of 2023 and a torn Achilles in Week 4 last season.

He should be 100% healthy by the 2025 season, which could lead to a huge year for Shaq Thompson.
