Despite the Buffalo Bills big come-from-behind win against New England last week, could coach Sean McDermott be on the hot seat?
In the latest episode of the Sportsnaut Interview podcast, host Evan Groat welcomed Buffalo Bills insider and WGR 550’s Sal Capaccio, the Buffalo Bills’ sideline reporter and radio host, to dissect the team’s thrilling 21-point comeback victory over the New England Patriots and to talk about McDermott’s future in Orchard Park. The Bills, now 10-4, remain just one game behind the Patriots in the AFC East.
“I don’t know if I learned anything I didn’t already know, but I think it kind of just confirmed what I already knew, which is when the Bills are playing the way they can play, they can still beat anybody in this league,” Capaccio said. He highlighted the defense’s ability to deliver clutch stops despite ongoing questions and praised Josh Allen’s brilliance, adding, “They’re still not ready to give up this division… Josh Allen’s 29 years old, so this is kind of normal in the NFL that it should go back and forth.”
When assessing the AFC playoff picture, without Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow, Capaccio offered a nuance.
“It’s the easiest path, maybe the most opportunistic path that they’ve had in this run, but it’s also probably the worst team they’ve had,” he said.
A key concern for the Bills is the likely need for three straight road playoff games, given Buffalo’s 0-4 record in road postseason contests since 2019. Capaccio acknowledged the difficulty.
“Playing on the road and playing at home are far different when it comes to crowd noise, getting your checks at the line of scrimmage,” he said.
With the up and down season, many of begun questioning if Bills head coach Sean McDermott could be on the hot seat if the Bills are bounced early in the playoffs. Capaccio said fan frustration is constant but it seems a long shot.
“It’s already happened… It doesn’t matter if they win or lose,” noting owner Terry Pegula values consistency and is unlikely to make changes, no matter what Buffalo’s playoff outcomes.
