Buffalo Bills at Atlanta Falcons: first half open thread
Buffalo Rumblings Buffalo Rumblings

The Buffalo Bills face off against the Atlanta Falcons tonight, and for the second straight week, the stakes will be rather high for an early-season game. Last week, the Bills had a chance to open a three-game lead in the AFC East, but after losing to the New England Patriots, they now find themselves a mere half-game ahead of their rivals. Given that New England holds the tie-breaker, Buffalo will find itself out of first place tomorrow with a loss tonight.

Of course, the standings don’t matter as much in October as they do in January, but in a week-to-week league, stacking victories and avoiding losing streaks is essential. With a bye week coming next week and some defensive reinforcements ready to return after that week off, a win tonight would be a huge morale boost for a team that was clearly frustrated by its subpar performance last week.

Buffalo has played Atlanta twice during head coach Sean McDermott’s coaching tenure, and they’ve won both contests. The Bills beat the Falcons at Highmark Stadium when the teams last met in a snowy, cold contest during the 2021 season. They also beat Atlanta on their home turf back in 2017, winning 23-17 in a game I most remember for this weird play that ended with Tre’Davious White’s first NFL touchdown.
