Shakir has become a premiere X-factor for quarterback Josh Allen
The Buffalo Bills and wide receiver Khalil Shakir have reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension, which will allow the dynamic slot receiver to continue catching passes from quarterback Josh Allen through the 2029 NFL season.
Per Adam Schefter, Shakir’s extension is reportedly “worth up $60.2 million, including $32 million guaranteed at signing with $18 million paid in the first 12 months.”
Signing Shakir now makes sense for several reasons. Shakir was set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, and losing a player of his caliber to the highest bidder was likely not a situation general manager Brandon Beane wanted to explore.
A former Boise State standout, Shakir was originally drafted by Buffalo in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In three NFL seasons, Shakir has caught 125 passes (165 targets) for 1,593 yards with seven touchdowns.
Though Shakir has yet to hit the century mark in yards over a season, his 2024 campaign was the first significant glimpse of his potential playing featured snaps with quarterback Josh Allen. When Allen needed someone to catch the ball and move the sticks in critical moments, Shakir proved time and again to be tailor-made for that role.
Khalil Shakir’s here to stay with One Bills Drive for the foreseeable future! One of Buffalo’s own draft picks sees his hard work pay off at home. How do you feel about his contract and the parameters laid out by Schefter?
Time will tell what this move means for other players set to become first-time unrestricted free agents next offseason. Will linebacker Terrel Bernard, defensive end Greg Rousseau, and/or running back James Cook see their name in similar lights?
