Buffalo Bills All-Pro ‘Contemplating Retirement’ Before Season Ends

Looking to improve a defense that ranks 13th in points allowed, the Buffalo Bills claimed one-time All-Pro cornerback Darius Slay off waivers on Wednesday. The initial belief was that Slay would be joining his new team immediately, possibly even putting him on track to play a few snaps on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Now, we’ve learned that Slay definitely won’t be available to the Bills on gameday this weekend.

Instead, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Slay has not joined the Bills at all. He’s in fact “contemplating retirement.” At this point, there’s a chance Slay won’t report to his new team.

It should be noted that the Philadelphia Eagles, Slay’s former team, also placed a waiver claim on the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback. Yet, since the Bills have a worse record than the Eagles do, Slay was awarded to Buffalo instead.

The 34-year-old can continue to debate whether he wants to retire all he wants. Yet, if Slay does decide he wants to play football this season, he’ll have no choice but to report to Buffalo and join the Bills.

That is, unless he and the Bills’ front office can find common ground and give him an opportunity to sign with a different team. Though, there’s been no indication that Slay has any sort of issue with the Bills or is holding out for a chance to play elsewhere.
