During a recent appearance on Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast, former Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Bud Dupree reflected on the time he delivered a bone-crushing hit on Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore in the 2016 Wild Card game.
Moore, who was scrambling, got blasted by Dupree as soon as he threw the ball. Dupree made helmet-to-helmet contact with Moore’s chin and jaw area, so it was a 15-yard penalty for roughing the passer.
Dupree’s wallet was docked $18,231 for the ruthless hit.
“I don’t think people really understand the intensity that Pittsburgh brings, man. Bro, I was in coverage and I just became the rat player. As soon as I become the rat player, you know, as soon as he come up, breaks the pocket, I can add on to the blitz. I saw him looking at me. I don’t know why he held on the ball that long.
“I don’t know how Cam be playing now with the rules changed, but we were trying to catch bodies every game. And it was fun because if a running back comes and reverses, Cam is running full speed down the line and kill people, trying to kill people. Him and [Stephon] Tuitt? Oh my god.”
Dupree is entering his third season with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Steelers’ first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Dupree spent two seasons in Tennessee before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. In 2024, Dupree was open to a return to Pittsburgh, but a deal with the Steelers did not materialize.
“If the opportunity came up, definitely!” Dupree said when asked if he’d be willing to return to Pittsburgh by Ron Lippock of Steelers Takeaways. “It’s a great organization and [Mike] Tomlin – he is who he is. The standard is the standard – for sure I’d go back!”
