Yet he’s currently focused on this week’s playoff matchup.
The Buccaneers Wild Card game against Washington is just under 72 hours away and offensive coordinator Liam Coen remains a focused man despite his name being thrown in a hat for a head coaching gig.
Amidst the buzz of a head coaching interview request from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Coen maintains a grounded perspective, emphasizing his current commitment to the Buccaneers.
“It’s an honor to even be in that category, but that hasn’t been something I’ve worked on much over the last few days,” Coen stated Thursday, highlighting his focus on the immediate tasks at hand rather than the potential leap to head coach. “It’s an honor, but not something we’re thinking about at the moment.”
Coen’s dedication to his current role and the team’s upcoming challenges showcase his professionalism and focus in the face of career-altering opportunities, and an opportunity that only 32 exist in the world.
But Baker Mayfield could ultimately have something to do with it after saying earlier this week he and Coen will have to face off on the golf course first before Coen can consider the interview.
“He doesn’t want to see me [laughs],” Coen told the media when asked about Mayfield’s challenge. “That’s not really part of the mindset right now. That’ll be next week after this stuff is done. The No. 1 mindset is to go win this game and then I’ll beat him in golf at some point.”
Sounds like the challenge is accepted. But first, Washington is on the schedule. And Coen is making that very clear.
