The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed undrafted rookie safety Sebastian Castro off the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to the NFL transactions page for Tuesday.
Castro, 24, joined the Steelers as a UDFA out of Iowa following the 2025 NFL Draft, when he was expected to be highly drafted. Castro was listed as the No. 183 overall prospect according to NFL Mock Draft Database, but signed with the Steelers for a $25,000 bonus after going unselected.
“For someone who thinks they’re going to get drafted and then don’t end up getting drafted, it’s like a shot to the heart. It definitely adds motivation,” Castro said at OTAs. “That’s part of the game, though. That’s why I love this game. You’re never going to win every single day and you’re never going to be perfect.”
The 5-foot-11, 203-pound Castro played both safety positions for the Steelers throughout the spring and summer, and at one point, looked like he had a chance to make the team as a depth option behind starters DeShon Elliott and Juan Thornhill.
But the Steelers signed veteran Chuck Clark early in training camp, pushing Castro to the practice squad when he was released in the final round of cuts in August and cleared wavers. Then, the Steelers also added Jabrill Peppers after Week 1, pushing Castro farther down the team’s depth chart at safety.
Castro appeared in all three preseason games for the Steelers, tying for the team lead with 10 tackles. His best game came in Week 2 against his new team, the Buccaneers, when he recorded five tackles.
