Could the Bucs look to find a corner early in the draft?
With the NFL draft quickly approaching, we will be taking a closer look at some players the Buccaneers may have some interest in this April.
We are starting off with a position the Bucs could target early and that’s where East Carolina corner Shavon Revel comes into play. Revel is someone the Bucs could be keeping a close eye on so let’s learn a bit more about him.
Revel actually began his college career at Louisburg College, but his 2020 season never happened due to the pandemic. He would play six games in 2021 before transferring to East Carolina. His first year there he played mostly special teams, but it was his 2023 season that would put him on the map.
He received second team All American Athletic Conference honors for his play in 2023. He had 54 combined tackles and one interception in 2023 and there was a lot of optimism for him heading into 2024.
Revel started the 2024 campaign off hot, having two interceptions in his first three games. Unfortunately, Revel would suffer a torn ACL in during practice in September of 2024 which would end his senior season early.
Revel is still recovering from the torn ACL injury so he did not test at the NFL scouting combine and he is not expected to do anything at the East Carolina pro day either. However, he did measure in at the combine to remind everyone of the physical nature he possesses.
He measured in at 6’2” and 194 pounds. While I’m sure some teams would prefer he bulk up a bit, the length he has combined with the speed that is shown on tape will be tempting for teams looking for an impact corner.
Assuming he is healthy and good to go to start the 2025 season, which the expectation is that he is, Revel could come in and immediately be one of the most physically gifted corners the Bucs have and probably would have the most potential out of the entire group.
However, with Jamel Dean still on the roster as of now and the team being big fans of Zyon McCollum, it would be an uphill battle for Revel to be the CB1 or CB2 on this team in his rookie season. Revel played almost exclusively on the outside while at East Carolina, so his rookie season may essentially be a red shirt year.
We have seen Jamel Dean have issues with staying healthy and on the field though throughout his career so Revel could definitely find playing time eventually even if he wouldn’t be listed as a starter on the initial depth chart.
If the Buccaneers are drafting Revel, it’s going to be using a premium draft pick so that would mean they envision him as being one...
