As the NFL season begins to heat up, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been the contract status of Baker Mayfield, who is entering the final year of a three-year, $100 million contract.
On one hand, Mayfield hasn’t quite gotten the Buccaneers over the hump just yet, but his production has routinely ranked among the best in the NFL, to the point where he’s been in the MVP conversation for the majority of his Tampa Bay tenure.
Asked about his contract negotiations with the Buccaneers, Mayfield noted that he wants to stay in Tampa Bay long term, as he’s already planted roots in the area.
“I would love to be there. I think both sides want to get it done. Now it’s a matter of finding that middle ground and what makes both sides happy. But we’ve, you know, like I fell in love with Norman, our family,” Baker said.
“We fell in love with Tampa, and it’s a great place to raise kids and be around. So regardless of what happens, I think we’ll spend our offseasons there. Obviously, it’s a little brutally hot, but it’s good for training.
“But it’s, yeah, I want to be there long term. They’ve treated me right, and it’s the first place I’ve gotten to that feels like Oklahoma when it comes down to football is football.”
According to Spotrac, Mayfield has a market value of $53.6 million per year, which would make him the seventh-highest paid quarterback in the NFL. While only time will tell if he can hit that market, his current AAV of $33.3 million is a severe underpay for a player producing far above his current contractual value, so Mayfield has every right to stand firm on a new number that better represents what he brings to the Bucs.
