Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings had something to say about the current situation between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their quarterback, Baker Mayfield.
The Buccaneers have yet to offer Mayfield an extension contract, as the former Heisman Trophy award winner is about to enter the final year of his current deal. Mayfield obviously wants to get paid big, but the needle hasn’t moved yet on that front, with the 2026 NFL season still months away.
For Jennings, who spent most of his playing career in the NFL in the NFC North, Mayfield has to be more direct with his approach amid his contract situation.
“Baker needs to stop being the nice guy right now, and play ball. It is a business. Sit. Where are they going to, Jake Browning?” Jennings said on Wednesday’s edition of “First Things First.”
Mayfield is on the Buccaneers’ payroll for $27 million in 2026, with a cap number of $39.975 million. If he is to be franchise tendered down the road by the Buccaneers, that will cost them $47.97 million, as calculated by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Mayfield has proven himself as more than just a capable starter under center for Tampa Bay, who previously signed a three-year, $100 million contract with the Buccaneers.
In three seasons so far with Tampa Bay, Mayfield has accumulated a total of 12,237 passing yards to go along with 95 touchdowns against 37 interceptions in 51 starts. He has led the Buccaneers to two NFC South Division titles.
