The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have some contract decisions to make, with one of them being with Baker Mayfield. The quarterback is in the final year of his contract, and though he and the team are in negotiations, they seem to be far apart on a resolution.

“Contract stuff is starting; it’s happening. Not anywhere close to what we’re thinking, but I’d love to be here long-term, and as of right now, that’s not the case. But I’m under contract for 2026, and the guys in that locker room and the staff know that I’m still going to be me,” Mayfield said via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Mayfield has been a key part of the Buccaneers’ success since joining the team in 2023, and it’s safe to say he’s played his best football there. The Buccaneers know that too, and the hope is that they can come to some type of deal before the season starts.

General manager Jason Licht spoke about Mayfield’s contract earlier in the offseason, and it sounded like they would make it a priority to get something done with him.

“Baker is at the forefront of our mind at all times,” Licht said via JoeBucsFan.com. “All of our plans revolve around Baker, and that’s something that we’ll get to at some point. I have had a lot of discussions with Baker about the team. We texted during the draft about some of the picks. I know he’s excited about the players that we took. We have a great relationship. Listen, nobody here wants Baker playing for every other team. So I’ll just leave it at that.”

Mayfield will have some key pieces to work with on offense, and it might be Emeka Egbuka who has a big season after the departure of Mike Evans in free agency. He’ll also still have Bucky Irving and Chris Godwin to rely on.
