The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently taking part in minicamp as they gear up for the upcoming 2026 NFL season, which is slated to get underway in September. The Buccaneers are hoping for a bounce-back year after missing the playoffs altogether in the 2025 season.

One of the biggest storylines of this offseason involves the contract situation of quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is entering the final year of a three-year deal with the franchise.

Recently, the star spoke on the state of negotiations as the season approaches.

“It’s pretty much the same, but for me, like I told you guys, it’s not going to affect how I approach this. Things will happen when they should, but for now, I’m worried about getting better each day, finishing minicamp… and going into training camp, so I’ll just handle it one day at a time,” said Mayfield, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times on X, formerly Twitter.

It was an expectedly diplomatic answer from Mayfield, who, for a large chunk of his tenure with the Buccaneers, has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. However, his elite play started to diminish down the stretch of the 2025 season, with the star reverting to some of the bad habits that plagued the early part of his career and seeing his numbers dwindle, resulting in the team missing out on the playoffs for the first time in several years.

Still, at age 31, Mayfield figures to have multiple years of solid play ahead of him, and it remains to be seen how big of a commitment the Buccaneers are willing to make for him as their franchise quarterback moving forward.
