Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is one of the most dominant and disruptive players in the entire NFL. But Jones finds himself on the wrong end of scrutiny this week after a brutal show of effort in Monday night’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars, buoyed by a miraculous Trevor Lawrence touchdown run with just 23 seconds left in regulation, knocked off the Chiefs, 31-28, dropping Kansas City to 2-3 on the young season.

To make matters worse, video from the pivotal Lawrence run appears to show Jones quitting on the play rather than trying to tackle Lawrence before crossing the goal line.

Jones begins the play trying to rush the passer. When Lawrence initially falls down, the Chiefs’ star seems to stop playing entirely. However, Lawrence was never touched down by a Kansas City player. He then stands back up and makes a break for the end zone. Despite watching him do so, Jones appears to stand still rather than attempting to track Lawrence down.

Would he have gotten there in time to make the tackle? It’s hard to say. Lawrence runs well, but he was also fighting to break tackles and keep his balance the entire time.

At the very least, Jones would’ve made it a close play had he sprinted and attempted to make the tackle. Instead, he watched it all unfold as Kansas City dropped yet another heartbreaker in the 2025 season.

“Does anyone have any explanation for what the hell he was doing aside from the obvious (gave up)?” one fan asked on X.

“It’s time to have a conversation about Chris Jones this season. He’s spent more time pouting and throwing tantrums on the sideline than he has making plays on the field. Third highest cap hit on the roster. Production has to be there. Inexcusable effort on the Lawrence touchdown,” wrote another.

Jones isn’t just a great player. He’s also one Kansas City’s emotional leaders and a team captain. If he’s giving this sort of effort, how can you expect more from anybody else?

Something tells us Andy Reid and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will be having a difficult conversation with their superstar player this week.
