Dawgs By Nature
Both GM Andrew Berry and QB Coach Mike Bajakian recently discussed Deshaun Watson with the media over the past two days, and they each had some interesting things to say.
When it comes to Watson’s health and how he looked throughout the spring, Bajakian reiterated multiple times that the 30-year-old quarterback looks excellent so far.
“Deshaun looks great physically,” Bajakian said. “What I’m seeing is a high, high-level athlete on the field over the course of the last 12 practices.”
We all know that Watson and his overall view by the public is less than ideal, but it’s good to hear that he’s finally looking like himself again from a health standpoint. Videos of him making big plays are all over social media right now, and it’s understandably garnering some excitement.
When Andrew Berry was at the podium, one of the biggest things that stood out was his response to a question regarding Watson’s outlook with the team in 2027 and beyond. As things currently stand, he’s set to become a free agent following the 2026 season, so it was incredibly interesting to hear AB’s current view on this topic.
Specifically, someone asked him if he sees a world in which the teams gives Deshaun Watson a contract extension to be the QB in 2027.
“I think everything’s on the table. I think it would be silly to go into the season and say something absolutely can or cannot happen and I think, particularly, at the QB position. I think you have to be open-minded and flexible. I wouldn’t rule out anything.”
Though it’s the first time that Berry’s really addressed this type of question in public this year, it was met with the typical “Andrew Berry” response. He gave an incredibly vague, but truthful answer.
Cleveland absolutely needs to find its QB of the future, and if Watson miraculously has an above-average season in 2026 and garners the trust of the organization, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Browns give him a 1-year extension at some point.
Regardless of whether or not Watson does well and gets an extension, it most likely wouldn’t affect the team’s plans of selecting a quarterback in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft.
