You usually don’t want to go out of your way to give one of the best offensive players in the NFL extra motivation ahead of a game where you’re tasked with trying to shut him down. However, Browns safety Grant Delpit decided to do exactly that by firing a shot in Derrick Henry’s direction prior to Cleveland’s meeting with the Ravens.
There is zero doubt that Derrick Henry is destined for the Pro Football Hall of Fame after he decides to hang up his cleats. However, it’s probably going to be a while, as the 31-year-old running back is still going strong after kicking off his tenth season in the NFL last week.
The man known as “King Henry” is one of just nine players who have rushed for at least 2,000 yards in a season, has led the league in yards on the ground on two occasions, and has a realistic shot at cracking the Top 10 on the list of players who’ve racked up the most of them over the course of their career by the time the current season comes to an end (he trails Tony Doresett by 1,147 after adding 169 when the Ravens faced off against the Bills to open the year).
Baltimore will hope to bounce back from the choke job that led to Buffalo earning a win when they host the Browns for a Week 2 matchup on Sunday, and a couple of guys who’ve suited up for Cleveland have opted to poke the bear ahead of that contest—including one who called out King Henry.
Both the Ravens and the Browns suffered a loss in their season opener, and most people expect Baltimore to earn a win in a game where they’re currently listed as 11.5-point favorites.
On Wednesday, Jerry Jeudy fired a shot across the bow of his opponents when the wide receiver said the secondary he’ll be facing off against poses “no challenges.” His teammate, Grant Delpit, decided to get in on the action on Thursday, as the safety responded to a question about the difficulty of tackling Derrick Henry by saying:
“Not hard. We’re playing football, man. It’s tackle football. Somebody got the ball, you gotta bring him down.”
Delpit does have some receipts he can use to support his claim, as he laid a very solid hit on Henry when the two teams met last year. However, I think it’s fair to wonder if those words will come back to haunt him or if he’ll be able to take a victory lap.
