The Cleveland Browns traded CB Greg Newsome II and a 2026 6th-round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for CB Tyson Campbell and a 2026 7th-round pick on October 10th.
Since then, Campbell has stepped into the starting field corner spot and never looked back. He’s been a breath of fresh air for a defense that was giving up unnecessary chunk plays through the air as of late, and he’s brought the type of physicality that Jim Schwartz likes to have on the outside.
Cleveland’s been missing that sizeable, bump-and-run type of player at cornerback that Martin Emerson Jr. filled for the defense, despite him being in a slump before getting injured.
Campbell has seemingly hit the ground running in Cleveland and has made life incredibly hard for opposing quarterbacks in multiple areas of the field. He’s an excellent and willing tackler as well, consistently stepping up in the run game and bringing the contact to ball-carriers on the perimeter. He’s come up with a couple of big third-down stops since his arrival as well.
Over his first two games for the Browns, he’s totaled 7 tackles, 4 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception that he returned for a touchdown against Miami last week. He’s also participated in 87% of the team’s total defensive snaps in the last two games.
To be 100% honest, Tyson Campbell being in Cleveland could force the team to make a difficult decision regarding Martin Emerson Jr.’s future. With Campbell playing as well as he is, and Emerson Jr. being a free agent in 2026, the team may not feel the need to re-sign or extend Emerson Jr. anymore.
In a perfect world, the Browns are able to successfully sign Emerson Jr. to a 1-year “prove it” deal after not playing at all in 2025, and having a bad year in 2024.
We’ll see how all of that plays out, but as of right now, Cleveland’s future at cornerback is looking pretty good with both Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell Jr. locked up for the next few seasons in Northeast Ohio.
