What started as a true competition between four quarterbacks, despite there being a clear pecking order in the process, has dwindled down to a battle of attrition for the Cleveland Browns QB competition. Kenny Pickett seemed to have an early lead, but a hamstring injury has knocked him out for most of training camp, leading to Joe Flacco getting the first official lead of the competition.

Shedeur Sanders was excellent in his preseason debut, but then he hurt his oblique, forcing him to miss the second preseason contest. Dillon Gabriel missed the first game with his own hamstring issue, played well, but had some mistakes in his debut in the second game.

Despite the team’s media department just unveiling Part 1 of “Man Under Center,” a series looking at Cleveland’s quarterback competition, HC Kevin Stefanski plans to name a starting quarterback this week and treat the third preseason game as a dress rehearsal:

As the Browns approach the preseason Week 3 as a dress rehearsal for the season opener against the Bengals on Sept. 7, there will soon be a decision on who will be named the starting quarterback.

“We’re working towards Week 1,” Stefanski said. “That’s part of what this week is about, getting our football team ready. So, we’ll make all those types of determinations in the next couple of days.”

Given the health of Pickett and how they’ve treated Flacco, it is fair to say the 17-year vet will be named the starter this week. What happens with the other three beyond that will be the more interesting storyline to watch.

Are you surprised the Browns will name a starter this week before the third preseason game happens? Any chance it is someone besides Flacco in your mind?
