Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel could decide the future, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett about the present
The Cleveland Browns have their fans concerned about the upcoming season. With the old saying “if you have two quarterbacks, you have zero” being doubled with the Browns QB competition between four quarterbacks:
Cleveland’s defense might be ready to carry the load, but without a solid option at quarterback, the 2025 Browns season might be all about 2026 and beyond. At a simple level, each quarterback makes sense as the team’s starter sometime this season:
In many ways, the Browns have to make one decision (which they’ve likely made) before making the decision on who is their starting quarterback: Does the best quarterback win the job or does the team’s plan/direction decide who wins the job?
We’ve seen some similar thoughts on social media:
Are GM Andrew Berry and Stefanski in win-now mode? If so, Flacco or Pickett almost have to win the job even if Gabriel or Sanders look a little better. Does the team need to “know” about Sanders and Gabriel, specifically in game settings, before the season ends, since they have two 1st round picks in 2026? If so, the better of the two rookies needs to take the snaps as soon as possible.
Or do they just let the competition play out, whoever is the best quarterback starts and sets the direction for the 2025 season?
In the end, it would not be a surprise to see the answer somewhere in between the two big options. Cleveland’s brass wants to win now, but if one of the rookies is neck and neck with one of the veterans, youth wins out and sets the future of the franchise (either as the long-term starter or proving the team needs one in the ‘26 NFL draft).
Which do you think should decide the starter in 2025: The best quarterback or the one that fits the team’s overall (and long-term) goals?
