Dawgs By Nature
In many ways, the Cleveland Browns roster is lacking a lot of battles for starting positions, outside of the key quarterback spot. The defense seems set with at least 10 of the 11 starters, with only the slot corner or third linebacker spot up for grabs. On offense, at least one of the rookie receivers is expected to start along with WR Jerry Jeudy, TE Harold Fannin Jr., and RB Quinshon Judkins.
The line seems set with a number of starters, but what position they play is still up in the air. Whoever starts at center could set off a domino effect. Veteran OL Elgton Jenkins seems to be the favorite, but according to Mary Kay Cabot, the team would prefer that their rookie takes the job:
The Browns would love fifth-round pick Parker Brailsford to start at center, but if he’s not ready, they’re fully prepared to start former Packers center and guard Elgton Jenkins there.
In general, that is not a surprise, as Jenkins has played better at guard than center.
Cabot also noted that the Browns QB competition could impact who they want at center, with the veteran having more value if the younger Shedeur Sanders wins the job:
The Browns might also want more of a veteran presence at the position while starting a rookie left tackle in Spencer Fano. And if Shedeur Sanders wins the job, the Browns might prefer a seasoned vet snap him the ball.
Following the trade of DE Myles Garrett, Cleveland is now balancing winning and developing the young guys on their roster. The quarterback decision being tied to the center competition could also balance those two things.
Does tying the QB and center starting decisions make sense to you?
