Browns offensive struggles: Film, data and Dillon Gabriel’s passing chart show the issues

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or a football film expert to realize that the Cleveland Browns offense is not very good. Heck, it is bad. Where film, stats and data come in handy is trying to explain in what ways the Browns offense is bad, if there is any fix and how the team could find ways to make improvements, if any.

We noted after the Week 6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers just how limited the offensive line makes things for Cleveland’s offense. Not quick enough anymore to run a movement-based line scheme and not big/strong enough to overcome that with power schemes. And, much like old Ohio State Buckeyes offenses with QB JT Barrett, defenses do not have to worry about passes going deep downfield, for the second week in a row:

Why is that so important? First, it allowed the Steelers defenders to just let receivers run free, while Gabriel had very little time to get passes off:

Second, offenses in the NFL can barely score unless they are making explosive plays, which most of the time come from throwing the ball down the field:

Not only is Gabriel not getting the ball downfield, but he is also not completing passes he should:

So, let’s see if we can summarize all of the above:

  • The line isn’t giving Gabriel time to throw
  • Defenders are barely covering deep passes because Gabriel isn’t even attempting them
  • The Browns offense can’t score mostly because they can’t create explosive plays
  • Gabriel isn’t even completing the short, intermediate passes that he should

All of that then means RB Quinshon Judkins is not only not getting good blocking from the line but is facing loaded boxes and defenders coming downhill at the snap of the football, with no fear of passes going over their heads:

On top of that, WR Jerry Jeudy is tied for the most dropped passes in the NFL this year:

Besides that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln? Good grief, it is not good for HC Kevin Stefanski’s crew.

Anything we missed? What of the above information stands out most to you about the Browns offense? Is there any chance of a fix this season no matter who is the head coach and/or play caller?
