Last season, the Cleveland Browns’ offensive scheme evolved from prior seasons to fit what Deshaun Watson excelled at most. With a completely new quarterback room this season, it appears that the offense will be shifting to include more elements of what Kevin Stefanski prefers to run. While the offense will continue to evolve, especially with the addition of Tommy Rees, there are several ways that Stefanski’s offensive scheme should lead to more wins for this team.
The first being red-zone efficiency – the team consistently struggled to convert in the red zone last season. They were 27th in the league for their red zone touchdown scoring percentage. Stefanski’s versatility and use of misdirection should give the team more opportunities to get the ball into the end zone.
Before the Watson era, the ground game was an essential part of the Browns’ game plan. Stefanski typically uses a lot of wide zone runs as a foundational part of his offense. If the running backs on this roster can exceed expectations, they will have increased opportunities to produce at a high level.
Getting multiple tight ends involved in the passing and run blocking game has always been a core part of the Stefanski system. David Njoku has emerged as one of the more talented offensive weapons on this team in the last few seasons and will be extensively involved in the game plan. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if Harold Fannin Jr. and Blake Whiteheart are also key pieces who get a significant target share. The ability to use these different packages will give Cleveland a variety of ways to move the ball and put points on the board.
