The normally guarded GM made some revealing comments to local reporters at the Senior Bowl
The Cleveland Browns are in a full-court press to find a solution at the quarterback position for next season and beyond. The team will explore all options, including the draft and free agency.
The college scouting circuit is now in full swing as the Shrine Bowl and Senior Bowl draw the attention of personnel departments across the NFL. The Browns have had a heavy presence at both all-star games, including head coach Kevin Stefanski.
General manager Andrew Berry was in Mobile for the first day of practice at the Senior Bowl and surprisingly gave some initial feedback on a few of the top quarterbacks in the draft to a few of Cleveland’s beat reporters. The comments were a bit more revealing than what I would normally expect from our calculated GM.
“Shedeur is a really impressive young man, he’s poised, he’s calm, he’s smart, and you can tell that he’s been raised by - quite honestly - a Hall of Fame dad. We’re going to get to know him even more over the course of the spring, but he’s really impressive.”
In a follow-up about the potential for Deion Sanders to object to the Browns selecting his son, Berry stated: “I don’t anticipate that being a problem,” Berry said, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.
“We obviously have a lot of familiarity with Tommy on a personal level. From a physical level, there’s really nothing that he can’t do. High-level athlete with a really strong arm, he’s been really a self-made man in terms of developing from the pocket throughout his Alabama career. It’s hard not to envision some of the things he’ll be able to do at the NFL level when you watch on Sundays and see some of these dual-threat guys, so he’s got immense potential, he’s a really hard worker, so interested to see obviously what he does this week.”
“High-level processor, really good anticipation, he’s accurate, and he really pounds the middle of the field. Like that’s really his game; he probably has some understated mobility.”
Having a feel for his initial reads on this QB class is helpful, and at some point, we hope to get some feedback on Cam Ward, who many believe will be the first quarterback off the board.
