Cleveland Browns’ Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta just announced that he will be leaving his role with the Browns to join the Colorado Rockies in the MLB. DePodesta had a previous career in baseball, so this move wasn’t entirely surprising; however, it does raise some questions about whether Cleveland plans to make any changes within their front office.
Owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam thanked DePodesta for his time with the team in a release to the press:
“We want to thank Paul for his contributions to the Cleveland Browns over the past nine and a half seasons. Paul’s humble and egoless approach encouraged a culture of teamwork and collaboration. He helped modernize our research and analytics departments and his broad background in professional sports brought a different perspective to our organization. We appreciate the valued role he played in our organization as a member of our leadership team and wish him all the best in his return to Major League Baseball with the Colorado Rockies.”
It was never entirely clear what DePodesta’s true role was in the organization and what decisions he participated in. Even in the statement above, we don’t get a lot of details on what he did before leaving. Like with any major organizational change, the team has an opportunity to reflect on their strategy today and whether they want to make any additional changes. They may choose to make changes to how they utilize analytics and view roster construction as a whole.
There could also be a ripple effect within the rest of the organization, as rumors have started to swirl. The team could see changes being made to the front office or coaching staff. There is a world where, after reflection, the team chooses to move on from Andrew Berry, Kevin Stefanski, or both. There has even been speculation that Berry could get a promotion into DePodesta’s role as a part of the changes.
There are still numerous questions to be answered, but all eyes will be on the Browns organization over the coming weeks to see if this was the first domino of many more changes to come.
