If the Cleveland Browns finally move on from Kevin Stefanski this year, a new report claims he could quickly land a head coach job elsewhere.
After an impressive 11-5 debut season, Cleveland fans had real hope that it was the dawn of a new era. They might finally have a coach and quarterback in Baker Mayfield that could get them to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. The duo didn’t.
Then, when they moved on from Mayfield, following a pair of losing seasons, and traded for Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson, before the 2023 season, there was renewed hope. However, outside a wild final few weeks that year and finishing 11-6 with greybeard Joe Flacco, the Browns have gone 5-22.
After going 3-14 last year, Cleveland could potentially have a similar or worse record in 2025. Unsurprisingly, it has added to the uproar from Browns fans to oust the former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator. With a 42-52 record in 94 games as a head coach, the assumption is that Stefanski would have to prove himself again before getting another head coach job. Well, maybe not.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Kevin Stefanski “would be a candidate in other places if the Browns were to decide to let him go.” That will surely surprise Browns fans after some poor results over the last two seasons. However, the reason may be because of a weaker-than-usual head coach market.
Graziano claims “the OC pool has kind of thinned out in recent years, as so many of them have gotten head coach jobs and been fired within two or three years, “and that organizations could instead choose to look “beyond the coordinator positions to position coaches” in their searches.
Furthermore, fellow ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler added that this year’s head coach “cycle is far more wide open” this year because there are no clear-cut strong contenders. For teams weary of hiring a first-time head coach, the 43-year-old with a pair of 11-win seasons on his resume could be appealing.
