Salary cap changes to expectations could help the Browns in NFL free agency

As the Cleveland Browns prepare to travel to the NFL Scouting Combine next week, they received some excellent news from the league today. The NFL announced a significant increase in the salary cap for the 2025 season.

According to a memo sent to teams, the expected cap is going to fall somewhere between $277.5m and $281.5m. That is a substantial jump from the $255.4m from last season and more than was expected. The Browns are also expected to have some rollover cap space for next year.

The expectation that the salary cap would rise has informed GM Andrew Berry’s contract structures throughout his time. With television rights potentially being renegotiated soon, that growth is expected to continue.

The Browns are still one of a few teams who have work to do in order to become compliant but that just got much easier with this news. One more restructure of the Deshaun Watson contract will give them some room to operate.

In addition, we’ve seen some realistic proposals lately but this could also help facilitate a trade of Myles Garrett in more than one way. First, the additional space makes the dead cap hit more sustainable and second, more teams will now be in play to afford his services moving forward.
