Browns fill roster spot left open after Joe Flacco trade

The Cleveland Browns made what is apparently one of the most shocking moves of the NFL season on Tuesday by trading quarterback Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals.

While everyone picks their jaws up from the floor in the wake of the first completed trade between the longtime divisional rivals*, the deal opened up a roster spot that the Browns needed to fill as they prepare for this week’s road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

General manager Andrew Berry checked off that box on Wednesday morning as the club signed cornerback Dom Jones from the practice squad.

The 6-foot-2 and 192-pound Jones is in his first season after signing with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State. The Browns elevated Jones from the practice squad for the past three games and, according to NFL rules, had to sign him to the 53-man roster if they wanted to have him available for another game this season.

Jones has mostly played on special teams, but he did see six snaps on defense in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions.

Signing Jones had a cascading impact on the rest of the roster, as the Browns signed cornerback Dee Williams to the practice squad and moved cornerback Ameer Speed to the practice squad injured list with a foot injury.

The 5-foot-10 and 190-pound Williams originally signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He played 12 games with the Seahawks, almost exclusively on special teams, before the New York Giants signed him off of Seattle’s practice squad.

With the Giants, Williams appeared in one game and played six snaps on special teams. The Giants released him on September 17.

*All hail the malfunctioning fax machine that saved the Browns from an ill-advised trade for Cincinnati quarterback A.J. McCarron in 2017!
