The Cleveland Browns likely won’t have one of their top defensive backs in 2025 after suffering a potential Achilles tear at practice on Tuesday.
“Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. suffered what’s an Achilles injury in today’s practice,” NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported. “He’ll undergo imaging to determine the full extent of the injury, but the expectation is it’s a significant tear.”

The talented cornerback was carted off the field on Tuesday after going down with a noncontact left leg injury. The potential season-ending injury occurred while covering wide receiver Diontae Johnson on a go route. After attempting to plant his leg at the end of the play, Emerson Jr. fell to the ground in pain. The 24-year-old immediately took off his helmet and tossed it in frustration.
Achilles injuries are becoming an all-too-common injury throughout professional sports. And it is an issue that is affecting stars in their later years and athletes in their prime. Emerson Jr.’s loss would be a huge blow to the Browns’ defense if he does have a tear that will require season-ending surgery.
After posting a career-best four interceptions in 2023, the former third-round pick took another nice step forward in his development last season as he finished second on the team with 80 tackles. His injury comes at a terrible time for him as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
