Browns Dawand Jones has surgery after illegal hit: What is an “avulsion” injury?

From “breakout candidate” to out for the season, OT Dawand Jones had a rollercoaster of a season in 2025. Even his first game showed some great things early, followed by a lot of concerning things. For the Browns, figuring out the offensive line for the rest of this year is the current issue, but long-term concerns remain with Jones finishing another season with a leg injury.

Given age, injury and free agency, it is possible that Cleveland could see a whole new starting offensive line in 2026.

The team announced Jones had undergone successful surgery on Friday for an LCL tear and a hamstring avulsion. So what is an avulsion?

The injury can range from a strain to a partial and a complete tear or rupture, and if the tear happens at
where the tendon attaches to the bone, it is called avulsion.

Interestingly, according to HC Kevin Stefanski, Jones’ injury took place on a play that should have been called a penalty:

The Browns announced that Jones is expected to make a full recovery for the 2026 season. Whether the team believes they can rely on the hulking tackle as a starter next year will be obvious if they use significant assets on the tackle spot in free agency and the NFL draft.
