So much for five quarterbacks being a good problem to have. For Cleveland Browns, it’s quickly turning into the opposite.
The Browns have a challenging scenario heading into the 2025-26 season. Deshaun Watson is expected back at some point, but even that feels more like a “we’ll see” than a guarantee. In the meantime, the team needs to sort through a crowded room that includes Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders.
And here’s the truth, Sanders doesn’t seem to be in the best position for the Browns.
With training camp already underway and the Browns looking to narrow their quarterback competition fast, some believe Cleveland should explore a trade for Sanders. According to Dawg Pound Daily, the Buffalo Bills would be a logical destination. Not for a starting job, obviously, but as a long-term developmental project behind Josh Allen.
“Josh Allen is locked in as the starter, and Mitchell Trubisky is back as the veteran backup,” the outlet noted. “But behind them, there’s room for a developmental quarterback. Sanders would be a low-risk, high-upside addition who could sit behind Allen, learn in a structured offense, and grow without pressure.”
That might be exactly what Sanders needs.
Back in Cleveland, it’s clear he’s trailing. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently wrote that while Flacco and Pickett are expected to be in the thick of the battle, Sanders started out behind and has a lot of ground to cover.
“Sanders was behind the pack to start, but worked to catch up and will have to continue earning his reps,” Breer wrote. He also mentioned Gabriel as a guy who’s shown good processing and a quick rhythm, two things Sanders still needs to polish.
The Browns don’t have time to wait. Stefanski wants to narrow the field quickly, especially with a brutal early-season schedule coming up. If Sanders isn’t seriously in the running now, he may not get another shot anytime soon.
A move to Buffalo could give him breathing room. He’d sit behind one of the league’s best, learn without pressure, and develop in a steady, playoff-tested organization.
