Browns add another young OC to head coaching search with interview request

The Cleveland Browns seem to be in the “no stone unturned” phase of their head coaching search, primarily focused on the offensive side of the ball. With GM Andrew Berry making it clear that the team would invest in the offense, it makes sense for the Browns head coach search to include some up-and-coming coaches on that side of the ball.

We followed Berry’s mandate in our three-round mock draft earlier on Monday.

So far, we know that Cleveland has interviewed their own offensive coordinator, Tommy Rees, as well as OC Todd Monken and OC Dan Pitcher from outside of the organization. The Browns have reportedly requested to talk to Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase for their head coaching role.

On Monday, news broke that another young offensive-minded coach, Jacksonville Jaguars OC Grant Udinski, was also being sought for an interview:

The young Udinski started as a coach when he was 24 years old, earning the offensive coordinator job under Liam Coen this year after the last three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, where his final titles were assistant offensive coordinator/assistant quarterbacks coach.

Udinski played defensive end in college at Towson from 2016-2018 and started his coaching career in 2019 as a graduate assistant at Baylor before joining the Carolina Panthers.

Coen calls the offensive plays for the Jaguars but has been lauded by QB Trevor Lawrence:

Famously, the Rams hired then 30-year-old Sean McVay to be their head coach back in 2017 after three seasons as the offensive coordinator in Washington. With Coen calling plays in Jacksonville, it is possible another team could poach Udinski for the same offensive coordinator title, but giving him control of the offense.

How would you feel about the Browns hiring a very young offensive mind, in general? Thoughts on Udinski in particular?
