The New York Jets began the second quarter from their own 26-yard line, which was, ironically, their first snap from inside their own territory in the game.
Justin Fields and the Jets tried to get their run game going against the Denver Broncos vaunted defense. That would bring up their best third down and distance opportunity of the game up until that point. On third and five, Fields went deep and overthrew his intended target — though he was well-covered by Riley Moss anyway. The Jets would punt it away.
An outstanding punt pinned the Broncos at their own 21 to start their next drive. Bo Nix went deep to Marvin Mims Jr. who was double-covered and it ended up looking like an intentional overthrow by Nix. An end around outside to Evan Engram gained seven to bring up a third and three, which was followed by a quick out to Engram for the first down.
JK Dobbins was stuffed for a short two yards gain, then a screen to Troy Franklin resulted in a six yard gain and no fumble that time. On third and and a short two, Nix kept it on an outside run for six yards and a first down.
After a five yard run by Dobbins, Nix was pressured early and was forced to throw it away. On third and five from midfield, Nix tried to get a quick toss outside to Dobbins but the pass was not great and fell incomplete to bring out the punt unit for the first time in the game for Denver.
Eyioma Uwazurike came up with a first down on sack on Fields, which ended up leading to a third and nine where Fields would be swallowed up by Jonathon Cooper for another sack and a three and out for New York.
The Broncos quickly crossed midfield on their next drive via a pass to Troy Franklin and a run up the middle by JK Dobbins. Bo Nix was then flushed outside and took off for an 11 yard gain. A terrible spot by the officials spotted them short of the first down, so on second and one, Dobbins powered up the middle for a short gain. That would bring up third and inches where Pat Bryan would flinch to push Denver back.
On third and give, Nix found Troy Franklin on a quick slant who made a huge play into the red zone. However, Matt Peart’s third penalty of the half negated the play and brought up a third and forever and the eventual punt.
The Jets got their first first down of the game just ahead of the two minute warning. The rest of their series was a crazy sequence of football that made no sense. Very embarrassing closing of the half for the Jets.
