The Kansas City Chiefs won the opening coin toss and deferred to bring out Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos offense to start the game.

After opening the game giving up a sack, Nix would find a completion to Troy Franklin for nine to bring up a third and seven. Nix would find Pat Bryant at the sticks for the first down to avoid a three-and-out to start the game.

Two plays later Nix would go for it all to Franklin deep and while the pass was nearly perfect it would bounce off Franklin’s hands for an incompletion. Nix would find Courtland Sutton on third and 11 on the next play anyway to convert and move the ball into Chiefs territory.

A pass to Evan Engram and a run by Jaleel McLaughlin would convert another first down. McLaughlin would slice through the middle for another nice gain to get Denver into the red zone on their first drive. Nix would hit Bryant again at the first down marker again to move Denver to the Chiefs 12 yard line.

Sean Payton got cute from there on a handoff to Harvey who threw a dangerous pass to Nix that should have been intercepted. They would get a good gain from Evan Engram on second down to bring up a third and three, but Chris Jones sacked Nix top bring out the field goal unit.

Broncos 3, Chiefs 0.

Patrick Mahomes opened up with a quick screen to Rashee Rice for a first down and an eleven yard gain. He would then overthrow on two deep passes and one over the middle to bring out the punt unit. Marvin Mims Jr. in his first game back broke through on a 70 yard return to set Denver up at the Chiefs 10 yard line.

Back to back carries by Harvey setup a third and five where Nix had his pass batted up in the air and fell incomplete to bring out the field goal unit for the second time in the first quarter.

Broncos 6, Chiefs 0.

On the Chiefs next drive, they would get a quick first down on a throw and then go to Kareem Hunt on back-to-back runs for another first down to get across midfield. A Chiefs offensive lineman took Malcolm Roach’s helmet off to force a 10-yard penalty to move them back into Chiefs territory on first down.

Mahomes would chuck it deep to Rice where yet another questionable defensive pass interference call was made on Riley Moss. The guy just can’t catch a break on deep coverage.

Two plays later a holding penalty pushed the Chiefs back to a 2dn and 18. Mahomes would then get crushed by Justin Strnad and Nik Bonitto after a short run. On third and 15, Mahomes would find Rice on a quick screen for a short gain to bring out the field goal unit to give Kansas City their first points of the game.
