According to 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos are signing former Saints and Broncos fullback Adam Prentice.
The former Colorado State fullback signed as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos back in 2021 but was eventually waived by them during the cut-down period. He would be claimed off waivers by Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints and stay with the team through the 2024 season. In that span, he appeared in 48 games for the Saints, which included 13 starts, and recently, he appeared in all 17 games for the Saints last season.
There has not been a corresponding move announced just yet, but this likely is not a great sign for veteran fullback Michael Burton. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury recently, so we will have to see if anything is up there. On top of that, Nate Adkins, who is a tight end/fullback, is dealing with an ankle injury that will sideline him through the start of the season and will likely start the year on the injured reserve. So, adding a veteran like Prentice to fill in makes sense for the Broncos.
Obviously, Prentice is familiar with Payton and the Broncos’ other offensive coaches, so it should be a smooth transition for the veteran fullback. Like most fullbacks, he is a blocking first player who can contribute on special teams. If he sticks around, that will be the area he plays for the team moving forward.
We just need some clarity on whether he is replacing Burton, who might be injured or even released, or if he is just depth due to Nate Adkins missing time with an ankle injury. We’ll have more on this when updates become available!
