The Denver Broncos are giving Davis Webb more responsibility, but the offensive identity will still run through Sean Payton. The offensive coordinator made that clear Thursday while discussing his new play-calling role.

The former six-year NFL quarterback enters his first season as coordinator after previously working with Bo Nix as quarterbacks coach. Now, Webb will manage the call sheet while keeping the system tied to the structure that helped Denver go 14-3 last season.

This message matters because the Broncos do not want a reset around Nix. Webb can add his rhythm without forcing the young quarterback into a new language or unfamiliar weekly process.

DNVR Sports’ Zac Stevens posted on X, formerly Twitter, sharing Webb’s remarks about keeping the Broncos offense connected to Payton’s vision despite the new role.

“Davis Webb stated this is still a Sean Payton offense
Added he wanted to stay in Denver because of Sean”

Webb explained how much the system will change with him calling plays:

“It’s the same offense for the most part, just little tweaks here and there, but this is a Sean Payton-coached football team, a Sean Payton offensive philosophy, and we’re just going to grow with our QB and our skill players and our offensive line.”

This approach should ease concern. The Broncos can give their first-year offensive coordinator influence while keeping Payton’s blueprint intact.

The setup also reflects trust between the coaches. Payton built the system, and Webb now manages rhythm and sequencing on Sundays.

For Nix, continuity may be the greatest benefit. He can continue developing within the same framework that powered Denver’s breakout 2025-2026 campaign.

Webb’s mention of small tweaks still leaves room for creativity. The team can adjust the offensive tempo and personnel usage without changing the system’s core.

Denver also secured long-term stability with Payton’s extension through 2030. For the Broncos, the play sheet may change hands, but Webb made clear the philosophy will remain Payton’s.
