Sean Payton has opened up on the moment he found out Bo Nix was hurt.

The Denver Broncos advanced to the AFC Championship Game with an overtime win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. But Nix will not be with them the rest of the way.

While the former Oregon quarterback may not have been aware of the severity of his injury right after it happened, he definitely knew something was wrong.

Nix walked off the field like he normally would after a win, but he was already in excruciating pain if Payton is to be believed.

Broncos reporter Andrew Mason has shared a clip of the head coach recalling how he found out the quarterback was in trouble.

“As he comes over [to the sideline], I kind of chest bump him, jab him, like, ‘Fricking A.’ And he’s like, ‘Careful.’ It was then I’m like, ‘You all right?’” Payton said.

The head coach added:

“And he said, ‘Yeah.’ He goes, ‘But, man, it’s hurting.’ And I said, ‘What do you got?’ He said, “My ankle,” and I said, ‘All right.’ I said, ‘You’ll be fine,’ and I tapped him in the chest again.”

Sean Payton And The Broncos Wasted No Time With Bo Nix

It wasn’t long before the team’s medical staff discovered the worst.

“We always meet after the game and discuss injuries, but that was early. And they said, ‘Look, there’s a fracture.’” Payton relayed.

“Showed me the x-ray. Immediately I walked down the hall. Bo was kind of sitting outside the locker room, leaning up against the wall. His wife, his parents, his family there, I think Stiddy, a few others.

“And I just asked him how he was doing, ‘Are you hanging in there?’ And I said to you guys last night, this is a strong-minded individual. Obviously it was disappointing right at that moment to get to this point. And so, that’s essentially what took place after the game.”

Nix will undergo surgery on Tuesday. Jarrett Stidham will start in the conference championship game next Sunday.
