The Denver Broncos are back to work after losing the AFC Championship Game last season under an unfortunate set of circumstances. Playing without Bo Nix, Denver’s hopes of a comeback against the New England Patriots were cut short by a whiteout blizzard that took over the second half.
One of the reasons that Denver failed to move the ball when the bad weather rolled in was the lack of consistency in the running game. J.K. Dobbins being out with an injury didn’t help, but the Broncos were never able to rely on the ground attack all season, even when he was on the field.
Sean Payton knows that and he has not forgotten the problems that it caused for his offense. On Wednesday at mandatory minicamp, the Broncos head coach spoke about how of his main goals in 2026 is to improve that aspect of the offense, via Zac Stevens of DNVR Sports.

“Clearly, improving the run game consistency-wise from a year ago prior to J.K. getting injured, it’s a little bit more day-to-day,” Payton said.
The Broncos brought back both Dobbins and RJ Harvey from last season to be apart of the backfield next year, so the continuity with Payton in the offense should help. Denver also drafted Jonah Coleman out of Washington in the NFL Draft, giving it a deep stable of backs to rely on.
Ultimately, the responsibility is going to fall on new offensive coordinator Davis Webb to get the run game involved. While Payton will still have a big say in the offense, Webb is the new play-caller and will be calling the shots.
The passing game is still going to be the bread and butter for the Broncos, especially after trading for Jaylen Waddle to pair with Courtland Sutton on the outside. That gives Denver one of the best wide receiver tandems in the NFL, and with Bo Nix presumably improving in his third season, that will be where Payton and company make their money once again in 2026.
