With Jaleel McLaughlin ruled out with an injury, the Broncos have elevated undrafted rookie Blake Watson from the practice squad.
The Denver Broncos have announced that they are elevating undrafted rookie running Blake Watson and defensive lineman Matt Henningsen from the practice squad to their active roster for tonight’s game vs. the Chargers.
With the Broncos ruling out running back Jaleel McLaughlin for this game due to an injury, the team will call on the undrafted rookie Watson for some depth. I would expect Javonte Williams, rookie Audric Estime, and perhaps Marvin Mims to handle the majority of the carries tonight, but we could see Watson get a few snaps.
The undrafted rookie out of Memphis was the Broncos prized UDFA signing this spring but has not done much this season. He is a small back with good speed and open-field ability, and he can contribute as a receiver. The Broncos have had their struggles with the running game this year so I would not be surprised to see him get a few carries but again, look for Williams and Estime to be the two main backs tonight.
The Broncos also elevated Matt Henningsen from the practice squad to the active roster. Veteran starter John Franklin-Myers sat out two practices this week with a foot injury so he may have been added to add some depth just in case his foot injury flares up during the game. Henningsen is an experienced player who has started games for the Broncos in the past so he’ll add some depth and experience to the Broncos trenches tonight. The Chargers love to run the ball so bulking up on defensive linemen is a good idea anyways.
The Broncos play the Chargers on Thursday Night Football tonight and can clinch a spot in the postseason with a win. We’ll see if Watson or Henningsen can help the Broncos secure the victory and their first postseason berth since they won Super Bowl 50.
