The Denver Broncos won the opening coin toss, but elected to defer to the Indianapolis Colts to start the game. It was the defense to take the field first for Denver.
Daniel Jones wasted little time attacking the Broncos down the field with a 19-yard strike. Defensive lineman Zach Allen went down on the field and needed some time before getting up and running off the field. What looked concerning turned to relief with that jog off the field.
Already past midfield after two plays, Jones and Colts went back to the air on play action deep with Pat Surtain in coverage who broke the pass up. Allen was back in the game after that where Jones hit a quick out for ten yards. Jones hit another 10 yard pass where Nik Bonitto would be hit for a 15-yard roughing the passer call and the Colts were in the red zone threatening to score.
A shot to the back of the end zone was overthrown on first down from the 15 and then a short three-yard run by Jonathan Taylor setup of a third down. Jones, from the shotgun, Bonitto got to Jones that time and forced him to throw it away. Denver’s defense would hold for the field goal.
Colts 3, Broncos 0.
On the Broncos first possession, they started with a JK Dobbins run for 18 yards. Two more runs and another 10 yards and first down for Denver to get into in field goal range. Bo Nix and the Broncos would begin throwing from there. A one yard completion, then a quick slant to Pat Bryant for 12 yard gain and another first down to the Colts’ 23 yard line.
On the very next play, Nix changed the play at the line and lobbed a pass deep into the back of the end zone for Marvin Mims Jr. who hauled it in for the game’s first touchdown.
Broncos 7, Colts 3.
Alex Singleton found himself in coverage on rookie Tyler Warren and lost him for a huge gain into the Broncos’ red zone again. Singleton appears to signal he had expected Justin Strnad to pick up the coverage, but that did not happen.
However, Jonah Elliss picked up a nice sack on second down to force a third and 7 at the Broncos’ 15 yard line. Jones, on third down, went to the end zone where Riley Moss made a touchdown-saving pass breakup. The Colts record-breaking start to the season continued with all nine of their offensive drives to start the season ending in points.
Broncos 7, Colts 6.
Dobbins opened things up with a four-yard run, then RJ Harvey picked up two yards on second down. Nix, on third down, went to Courtland Sutton but it wasn’t catchable for a quick three and out for the Broncos’ offense.
The Colts streak of offensive scoring drives looked to extend to 10 drives after a catch and run for a huge gain by Jonathan Taylor. A run of...
