The Denver Broncos announced several roster moves today, including placing offensive linemen Matt Peart on the injured reserve. According to reports, Peart suffered a knee injury on the third play of the game vs. the Jets and would play through the injury the rest of the game. This may explain why he struggled at times on Sunday, and it ended up being serious enough that it landed him on the injured reserve. The team also announced that they have placed special teamer/linebacker Garrett Wallow on the injured reserve due to a hamstring injury.
With two roster spots open on the 53-man roster, the Broncos went out and signed former All-Pro special teamer J.T. Gray off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad and signed veteran guard Calvin Throckmorton off their practice squad.
Gray was a longtime standout special teams player for the Saints who was surprisingly released earlier in the year. Many, including myself, anticipated the Broncos having interest due to the obvious coaching connections in Denver. However, he would end up signing on to the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. However, after losing special teamer/linebacker Garrett Wallow, the Broncos decided to go out and sign Gray to their 53-man roster.
Gray played for the Saints from 2018 through the 2024 season but was a surprise cut by the team prior to the start of the 2025 season. During his time with the Saints, Gray was a First-Team All-Pro in 2021 and was named a Second-Team All-Pro twice (2024 and 2019). He was also named to the Pro Bowl in 2019. He has connections to Head Coach Sean Payton as well as Special Teams coach Darren Rizzi, so the fit makes sense. Gray will now join the Broncos and likely take on a significant role on their special teams unit that has struggled recently.
Veteran guard Calvin Throckmorton was also signed to the Broncos’ 53-man roster and will likely be their starting left guard this Sunday vs. the Giants. With Ben Powers and now Matt Peart on the injured reserve, Throckmorton appears to be the next man up at the left guard position. He played well in the preseason and has been on the practice squad the past few seasons, and he knows the offense well. Hopefully, we see him step in and perform well against a tough Giants defensive line.
The Broncos also announced that they have signed guard/center Karsen Barnhart and edge rusher/defensive end Garrett Nelson to their practice squad. These two spots were available due to Throckmorton being signed to the 53-man roster and wide receiver Thayer Thomas being waived/injured.
In other transaction news, former first-round pick Treylon Burks visited the Broncos today and left without signing a contract, which was expected. He will now visit the Tampa Bay Bucs, who are dealing with multiple injuries at wide receiver. The initial report indicated that he had significant interest, so we’ll see if he ends up signing with the Broncos or not.
