49ers QB Brock Purdy received a no-trade clause, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo
We should have a breakdown of Brock Purdy’s contract extension later this week. As more details about the San Francisco 49ers franchise quarterback emerge, it’s clear that the Niners are making a commitment to Purdy.
The latest detail comes from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, who reported on Sunday that the 49ers gave Purdy a full no-trade clause for the duration of his deal.
This news comes after Purdy received $181 million guaranteed of his $265 million extension—one that will keep him in the Bay Area through the 2030 season.
You might have heard of the other quarterbacks with a no-trade clause. That list includes Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts.
Garafolo finished his tweet by saying, “Purdy gets financial security and control over his future in a deal that will be finalized and official soon.”
Is the no-trade clause that big of a deal? It looks good on paper, but I’m not sure it is. Teams get creative with contract structures and give themselves outs down the line. Purdy’s is unlikely to be any different.
One quarterback with a no-trade clause that doesn’t look great one year later is Kirk Cousins. But the Atlanta Falcons drafted a quarterback, and now he’s willing to wield that clause.
Again, we’ll know more once the details are finalized and public, but it would not be surprising to see the Paraag Marathe work out a way for the team to get out of the deal three or four years down the line.
That might read as a slight toward Purdy, but it’s not. We’re talking about the person who might have single-handedly saved this regime. The contract, the no-trade clause, and the guaranteed money are Brock’s reward for his play during the previous 2.5 seasons.
It also doesn’t mean the 49ers won’t look to protect themselves. Every team does it with every player who isn’t considered in the top five at their position.
