Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tried to do something nice for someone. Unfortunately, it was, as often happens with her, a little tone deaf.
Last week, Brittany Mahomes asked her many followers in an Instagram story to donate money to a GoFundMe for some neighbors of some friends of hers. Sadly, she reported, a couple with three children recently lost their house. The cause was a fire that occurred after the kids were making some s’mores.
“On Tuesday evening, my brother’s family experienced a devastating house fire that has completely turned their world upside down,” the GoFundMe explains. “While Brian and Jen stepped out briefly to return their food truck just a couple of miles away, the kids — Brayden (almost 12), Maddox (9), and Rowan (7) — were at home. Brayden and Maddox had made s’mores using their s’mores maker, and thinking it was safe to put away, Brayden placed it in the pantry while it was still hot and covered with plastic. Within minutes, it ignited.”
Luckily, no one was hurt in the blaze, but the family “lost nearly everything inside the home,” it continued. The GoFundMe goes on to state, “insurance will eventually help with the rebuild, but it doesn’t erase the immense financial burden or address the immediate needs they’re facing — especially with the holidays approaching.”
Following the accident, Brittany Mahomes issued a public plea for donations to help the family.
“Hi guys, a friend of ours’ neighbor just lost their home to a fire,” she wrote on Instagram. “If you feel inclined to help, please do. A little goes a long way in times like these, so anything helps!”
While she is not wrong, asking for money “in times like these” triggered an avalanche of criticism from people. After all, her husband, Patrick Mahomes, has made over $232 million playing football, not counting endorsements. By the time his current contract ends, that number will skyrocket up to more than $497 million.
“I don’t know but don’t you have hundreds of millions of dollars?” one person wrote. “You could build or buy them one without any media and not miss a single bill that’s due. See the regular people out here are struggling to buy groceries and pay their electric bill. People care but are struggling.”
“You’ve got to be kidding. You’re multi-millionaires many times over,” another person wrote. “Stop begging others to help & just write them a check.”
“I feel sorry the family that lost their home. I think it’s rich that a person of her wealth asks people who are struggling,” read one comment. “I’m going to go out on a limb, I hope it was truly Brittany’s normal middle-class upbringing that urged her to ask for our help, forgetting they have $$$.”
“Seriously? Patrick & Brittany, you should be ashamed, you could buy them two homes & probably not even notice the expense,” another...
