News of the Chicago Bears leaving Illinois has dominated the headlines throughout the offseason. But the bigger news is that their new stadium could have a dome. Some former Bears, like Brian Urlacher, do not like the idea of playing inside a dome, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
“I do not like the Bears playing anywhere but Soldier Field. Even if they went to Arlington Heights, which is in Illinois, they’re going to be in a dome, and if they go to Indiana, they’ll be in a dome. I don’t like the idea of them playing in a dome anywhere,” Urlacher explained.
The Bears’ new stadium will likely have a cover to prevent the elements from creeping through. That would be a vast difference to Soldier Field, which has hosted numerous classic games that had a mixture of heavy snow and wind.
Many older fans remember “The Fog Bowl”, which was a classic NFC Divisional Playoff battle against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 31, 1988. Likewise, those same fans also remember the 1985 NFC Championship against the Los Angeles Rams, where they used the elements to advance to the Super Bowl. Recent fans will remember the 2026 NFC Wild Card win over the Green Bay Packers for the snow-covered field.
This stadium drama could persist as the Bears head into the 2026 season. If the team ultimately decides to move to Indiana, it could become a distraction as they attempt to build on a solid season in which they reached the NFC Divisional Round. It could also change the entire way the Bears play home games.
