The betting favorite to be the next Cowboys head coach is a bit of a surprising name.

It has been one week since the Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy went their separate ways, and as of Monday morning following the Divisional Round both are still working on their next endeavor.

McCarthy has formally interviewed with the Chicago Bears and is reported to be a top candidate of the New Orleans Saints as well. On the Cowboys side of things they have conducted two formal interviews with Kellen Moore and Robert Saleh, but with them now officially able to interview Detroit Lions staffers the calculus (or at least potential calculus) involved has changed a bit.

While Moore and Saleh are the only interviews to have officially taken place, Dallas has been connected to a handful of other names: Deion Sanders, Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Kliff Kingsburgy and Jason Witten. Another name that has been mentioned, to a smaller degree than any of these, has been Brian Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer is coming off of his second season as the Cowboys offensive coordinator, third on the staff overall, and while he has held that title he has not called plays for the team given that McCarthy chose to do so after Kellen Moore’s departure. Schottenheimer comes from a strong NFL lineage as he is the son of Marty Schottenheimer, someone with whom Mike McCarthy has mentioned was a strong influence in his own coaching career.

It is difficult to assess Schotteinheimer’s qualities to be the next Cowboys head coach given that he did not call plays as noted (he has previously in his career with other teams). As true as that is though, he is currently the betting favorite at one site to win the job.

The DraftKings odds for the next Cowboys coach, which have been more on-again/off-again of late than Elaine Benes and David Puddy, are back up. And there’s a new favorite.

Current Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer now leads the way, at -250. Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who spent five years on the coaching staffing in Dallas, previously was the favorite. He’s now +250.

The initial favorite, Colorado coach Deion Sanders, has plunged to +750 — with six others in front of him.

To be clear here we are going off of betting odds, but the buildings in Las Vegas are as big and shiny as they are for a reason. It is a bit strange that Schottenheimer jumped the field like this, it is incredibly strange the more you really think about it.

It is fair to wonder if the timing of all circumstances involved has had anything to do with this. On Sunday morning, the morning after Detroit lost and therefore the wheels of general motion around the league as a whole began to move, many insiders noted that they expected all six head coach vacancies in the league to be filled this week. This was said even prior to the [Philadelphia...
