Giants could use Kayvon Thibodeaux as trade bait to go get the quarterback Daboll wants

New York Giants coach Brian Daboll “is not a Shedeur [Sanders] guy,” and the Giants could use Kayvon Thibodeaux as part of a trade package to land the quarterback Daboll may prefer, according to Todd McShay of The Ringer.

The possibility of trading Thibodeaux should the Giants, as expected, draft Penn State edge defender Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has become a discussion point. Now, McShay has fanned the flames.

“Something big is coming down the pipe,” McShay said Wednesday on his podcast, though he indicated he wasn’t sure what exactly that would be.

If it is the Giants moving back into Round 1 for a quarterback, McShay said the trade package could begin with the 24-year-old Thibodeaux, the No. 5 overall pick in 2022 who is now entering his fourth season.

McShay said he believes Giants head coach Brian Daboll has identified the quarterback he wants and that “I know it’s not Shedeur [Sanders].”

“Daboll is not a Shedeur guy, and Daboll prefers Jaxson Dart,” McShay said. “I don’t know to what level.

“There’s speculation in league circles that there’s a push from Daboll to use the Giants’ first pick on the quarterback.”

McShay has Dart as QB2 ahead of Sanders on his final big board. He believes the Giants would be correct to let Daboll identify the quarterback he wants to work with because the Giants’ coach “is one of the skilled elite” when it comes to understanding the quarterback position.

In this draft, though, McShay does not believe the Giants can get Daboll his quarterback at No. 3.

“I love Brian and I just told you how much I appreciate and respect him. I don’t let the coach make the decision on when we’re going to take him [Dart, if he is the target],” McShay said. “This is why the GM has to make this decision because you don’t take Jaxson Dart at three and why don’t you take Dart at three even if you love him [is] because Abdul Carter’s sitting there.”

At that point, McShay said, it would be on GM Joe Schoen “to figure out how I go get him.”

“I’ve got Kayvon Thibodeaux, by the way, who we’re not sure we want to we want to sign, we haven’t done the the fifth-year deal,” McShay said. “I’ve actually heard one potential scenario is you take Abdul Carter 3 you use Kayvon Thibodeaux as part of a package to then move back into the first round to get Jaxson Dart.”

In his view, McShay said the Giants can’t trade down from No. 3 with the expectation/hope of landing their quarterback.

“You can’t move back because if you move back then it might signal ‘oh they’re going to take Dart there’ and maybe it tips New Orleans and New Orleans goes up a couple spots,...
