According to reports from ESPN, the New York Giants have fired head coach Brian Daboll. The former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator was in his fourth season at the helm of the Giants. His overall record during his tenure was 20-40-1 in the regular season, and 1-1 in postseason play.

Daboll’s firing comes on the heels of another brutal collapse, as the Giants lost 24-21 after having a ten-point lead in the second half against the Chicago Bears. This was the third time this season that the Giants had lost a road game where they led by ten points or more at some point in the contest.

After winning NFL Coach of the Year honors in his first season, leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a postseason berth, Daboll seemed set for success in his first stop as a head coach. His Giants won an upset victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 NFL Playoffs before ultimately falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round.

Unfortunately for Daboll and the Giants, that first season was his high-water mark, as the team has gone just 11-33 in the years since. Losing All Pro running back Saquon Barkley to those rival Eagles didn’t help, and while quarterback Daniel Jones was good enough to earn a second contract after thriving in his first year with Daboll, ineffective play ultimately led to his release. Jones has found a second act this season with the Indianapolis Colts, as he leads the NFL in passing yards this season with 2,696 so far.

The Giants seem set at quarterback, as Jaxon Dart has looked good so far in his rookie year, but the strong play from Daboll’s hand-picked quarterback wasn’t enough to save his job.

In four seasons as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator, Daboll oversaw the development of Josh Allen, helping to mold the raw athletic specimen into a consistent threat. Allen has ultimately become one of the NFL’s best players. Buffalo’s offensive ranks with Daboll as the offensive coordinator rose from No. 30 overall in Allen’s rookie year, 2018, to two consecutive top-five finishes in points per game and yards per game across the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Daboll hired several coaches from the Buffalo Bills at the time including former Bills quality control coach Shea Tierney, wide receivers coach Chad Hall, and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, though Johnson was fired after 2023.

Former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen is still the general manager in New York at this time and will lead the search for the next Giants head coach.

Current Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is under heavy criticism for the Bills’ poor offensive showing during the 2025 season, so there is no doubt some fans will wonder if Daboll returns to Buffalo. Last year, fired New York Jets coach Robert Saleh was hired as a consultant with the Green Bay Packers before re-joining the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator in 2025. Would Daboll serve as an...
